In life there are fewer times more stressful than when you have to move. If you haven’t had to move home yet, you might be feeling rather positive about it; all you have to do is pack boxes and move some pieces of furniture, right?
But only if it were as simple as that; for those that have had the pleasure of moving before know the reality of moving house is usually a long way away from just packing boxes.
Before you need to do anything at all, you should first make space by doing a proper clearout. You must be somewhat brutal here; any clothes you don’t wear any more will need to go, along with anything broken which has been waiting to be fixed for more than a year. You will be stunned the amount of people have garden sheds or attics full of things which are no longer used.
One issue to make sure you sort out in the beginning is paperwork; even the most organised people can find it difficult to keep up with all of it all of the time.It has a habit of gathering in draws, magazine holders and bookcases so relax and take a day and go through it all first and throw away everything that isn’t important!
By throwing out all that you don’t need you will free up a lot of space in your new house which gives you plenty more options when trying to decide on furniture placement and so on. In addition to this you'll have a better understanding of what you need for your brand new home, that makes life easier in the long run.
An often forgotten rule of packing is to not have boxes with random things in them. Now that you've removed the many items you don’t need, you should have a spot for almost everything in your new home. Write which room each box is going to on every single box to ensure that when you unpack you don’t get anything mixed up. This will guide any removal guys in unpacking your items more efficiently and provide you with a much needed head start when unpacking.
Many usually overlook the fact that they need to eat the night before and the day that they move. Leave a box open with your kettle, some plates, cutlery and everything else you have got to eat inside it.The very last thing you would like to be doing once you get to the new property is rummaging through boxes to get a coffee cup or dinner plate!
Furthermore, remember to leave a box for the covers and bathroom things you use the day of the move. Removal companies will show up very early so make sure you are prepared before they turn up; have a shower and something to eat.
Finally if you can, try and have somebody at each end; this way you make sure that the removal guys don’t make any mistakes once they get to the new house and they take absolutely everything from the old one. An additional benefit of this is that when the team leave the person in the new house to come back to the old one to re-load; the person at the new house can begin to prepare extra space where some of the furniture will be going before they get back.
